I need your help to continue fighting for First Amendment rights and to protect a free and secure Internet. SOPA, the Stop Online Piracy Act, will weaken Internet security and trample on First Amendment rights. The key provision of this bill gives the DOJ the power to shutter websites even though there has been no judicial determination of the fact that sites are dedicated to the theft of U.S. property. This is a suppression of speech, and courts have consistently held that silencing this expression in the absence of judicial review is classic prior restraint prohibited by the First Amendment.

I support intellectual property rights and believe we must combat commerce in counterfeit goods. However, at the same time we must not muzzle speech or stifle innovation and economic growth to achieve this objective.

Do we really want to give Attorney General Eric Holder and his Department of Justice the power to shut down the Internet? Supporters of this legislation are hell-bent on ramming it through Congress.

Please help me continue to fight to kill this bill.
